School District Learns Lessons of Upgraded Performance, Lowered Material Costs

While Oneida City School District in central New York has outlaid capital expenditures for the expansion projects to keep pace with the growth in student enrollment, maintenance demands and long-term cost savings are major issues impacting the buildings' design. As a result, Oneida School District has put a premium on both long-term performance and cost-effectiveness of the roofing systems, especially the insulation. A number of roof insulation performance factors were considered, including thermal efficiency, an imperviousness to moisture, compressive strength and dimensional stability. In addressing cost, without compromising performance, FOAMGLAS
® cellular glass insulation was specified. Central New York is one of the worst regions in terms of temperature differential. In the summertime, roof surface temperatures can reach 210°F (98.8° C), and in the winter, these temperatures can drop to -20°F (-28°C). That 230°F (110°C) temperature differential creates a tremendous potential for insulation expansion and contraction between the top and bottom layers of insulation. FOAMGLAS
® Insulation is more dimensionally stable in that respect. Officials at Oneida City School District are convinced they have the longest lasting, most functional school roofs available for the money.
