By Switching Insulation Systems, North Carolina Natural Gas Plant Boosts Production Output and Lowers Energy Costs


When North Carolina Natural Gas Corporation needed to replace the polyisocyanurate insulation at its storage facility, the company looked to FOAMGLAS® Insulation to protect its system. The facility condenses and stores the natural gas for between four and five months during the summer when consumer demand slows. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) conversion operation is energy-intensive and demands strict adherence to temperature control. When insulation failures occur, they represent a loss of energy, natural gas and money. FOAMGLAS® Insulation was used to cover approximately 720 feet of 3-inch cryogenic piping and associated fittings and valves, 110 lineal feet of 3-inch vertical pipe that leads from the main storage tank into the vaporizers. The number of expansion joints was substantially increased by using FOAMGLAS® Insulation.
