Success Story Summary
Detroit Edison Receives Time, Cost Advantage of Using Prefabricated Insulation

When the 5,100-foot-long steam line that supplies electricity to Wayne State University would need to be replaced, Detroit Edison needed insulation for the new pipeline that was nonabsorbing and had a high compressive strength. They chose FOAMGLAS
® cellular glass insulation. Because the new pipeline needed to be installed quickly, Detroit Edison chose Pittsburgh Corning Corporation’s ADVANTAGE
® system, a one-step process. The wrap-around design of the ADVANTAGE
® system allows the insulation to be easily installed to piping as a single piece for most small-to-medium pipe sizes. For larger pipes, two- and three-piece wrap-around sections replace traditional quad segments and lags. By using the ADVANTAGE
® system on the steam-line project, Detroit Edison saved approximately 15 to 20 percent in labor time and costs. And, since the product ships flat, it saves on transportation and storage costs.
