Success Story Summary
FOAMGLAS® Insulation Meets Citrus Plant Needs for Impermeability, Strength, Performance

Southern Gardens Processing Corporation's new citrus processing plant in Clewiston, Fla., includes piping systems for over 40 types of fluids and a number of stainless steel tanks ranging in size from 100 to 186,000 gallons. In addition to process liquids, pipelines carry steam, condensate, glycol, refrigerants, oils, gas and more at temperatures ranging from 350°F (176°C) to well below zero. FOAMGLAS
® Insulation was specified for the cold piping applications carrying juice and concentrate because of its imperviousness to moisture—regardless of whether its vapor barrier finish gets damaged or not in the course of day-to-day operations. The piping systems carrying cold fluids operate in most areas of the plant in ventilated-only environments. As a result, the piping systems operate in the high South Florida ambient humidity which often approaches 100%. The impermeability of the insulation was especially important for piping carrying fluids below 32°F (0°C) because any moisture that might penetrate the insulation system could become frozen and contribute to internal insulation damage, and the eventual failure of both the insulation and piping systems. Also, piping which was exposed to the outside elements and carried either hot or cold fluids such as steam, condensate, ammonia refrigerant and glycol were specified to be insulated with FOAMGLAS
® Insulation because it could withstand the elements of sun, rain and constant humidity without concern for failure. FOAMGLAS
® Insulation was also chosen because it provides excellent chemical durability – citrus oil can destroy many other types of insulation.
