Success Story Summary

Cryogenic Air Separation Plant Relies on Noncombustible, Nonflammable Insulation

When BOC Gases, a worldwide leader in the manufacture and supply of industrial gases and gas-handling technology, needed a reliable insulation product for its new air-separation plant, it chose FOAMGLAS® Insulation. Converting oxygen from a gaseous to a liquid state requires a tremendous amount of power and a large amount of energy dollars. The insulation is particularly important at the flash points—the valves and flanges where, without the right kind of insulation, oxygen can become vaporized and possibly shut down the process. Designed to accommodate temperatures of -320°F (-195°C), the system includes pipelines with a series of 80 shutoff valves, recycle valves, block valves and discharge valves, all of which contribute to overall operation safety and quality control. All are protected by FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation.
